Matiangi Fred

A new political dialogue has arisen following National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah’s sharp criticism of former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i concerning the longstanding Ruaraka land issue.

Ichung’wah claimed that Matiang’i had little to demonstrate from his tenure as Education Cabinet Secretary, specifically alluding to the Ruaraka land controversy. He was quoted as saying, “Fred Matiang’i, during your time as Education Minister, the only significant action you took was to steal the Ruaraka land.”

These comments have reenergized the Ruaraka land debate, which has previously led to multiple inquiries and legal actions regarding compensation for land utilized by public schools.

The Ruaraka issue has raised concerns about the payment of billions for land occupied by Ruaraka High School and Drive Inn Primary School. Matiang’i has consistently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the proper government protocols were followed.

In September 2026, Matiang’i reiterated his stance on the controversy, emphasizing that the acquisition was managed by the National Land Commission and that all necessary approvals were secured. He also pointed out that court cases did not demonstrate any misconduct by the Ministry of Education during his administration.

Ichung’wah’s recent comments reopen a politically sensitive conversation that has persisted for years, particularly as Matiang’i remains an active player in Kenya’s political scene.

This exchange occurs amid shifting political alliances in preparation for the 2027 General Election, with influential politicians increasingly examining previous government actions and decisions.

Ichung’wah’s remarks are expected to provoke a response from Matiang’i and his supporters, especially given his earlier assertions that the Ruaraka acquisition was conducted appropriately.
