Ken Wa Maria is among Kenya’s most familiar Kamba musicians, but his path to the entertainment industry was filled with challenges.

Long before he became a celebrated artiste, he worked odd jobs in Nairobi and traded secondhand clothes at Gikomba Market.Born Kennedy Wambua Ngunze in Machakos, Ken Wa Maria developed a love for music while growing up.

He was a member of the Catholic Church choir, where an Italian priest introduced him and other young people to musical instruments and basic performance skills.

He later studied at Kangaru High School. After completing his secondary education, Ngunze relocated to Nairobi in search of a better life.

His early years in the city revolved around making ends meet.

He worked as a casual labourer in factories around the Athi River before venturing into the secondhand clothing trade at Gikomba.

His time at the market also shaped his dressing, as he became fascinated by the variety of clothes available there.

Even as he worked to support himself, Ken Wa Maria continued with his studies.

He pursued business statistics at the University of Nairobi and later obtained a master’s degree from Strathmore University.

His growing passion for music eventually pushed him into professional performance.

He largely chose the Kamba language, using familiar expressions and cultural themes to connect with his audience.

His music career began gaining momentum in the 2000s. In 2004, he released his debut album, We Nzamithya Mwelu.

Around the same period, he established a musical group that started as Yatta Boys Band and was later renamed Yatta Orchestra International.

His major turning point came with Fundamentals.

The song gained considerable popularity in December 2013, increasing his profile and introducing his music to audiences beyond the traditional Kamba market.

Ken Wa Maria has also played a role in nurturing upcoming artists through Yatta Orchestra.

His songs have explored romance, politics, humour and various issues affecting society.

Outside entertainment, he has built several sources of income.

His business interests have included vehicle trading, freight transport, poultry farming, matatu operations, a garage in Umoja, a music shop and property investments.Music has nevertheless remained central to his career.

His performances have reportedly earned him more than KSh100,000 at some events.

From casual work and selling clothes at Gikomba to commanding major music stages, Ken Wa Maria’s journey has been defined by persistence, business sense and a strong connection with his audience.
