Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has formally sued the Standard Media Group over recent reporting that covered an exposé on the Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay.
In court documents seen by Kenyans.co.ke, Kaluma claims that the publications contained in the Standard News paper and KTN News bulletins conveyed false statements and implications about him that harmed his reputation.
“The publication aired by the Defendants was intended to injure and has indeed injured the reputation and credit of the Plaintiff as a person, a role model, together with his family, as a professional being an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and in his public service career as an elected leader,” Kaluma stated.
“In consequence of the aforesaid publications, the Plaintiff has been gravely injured in his credit, reputation, character and standing as a person and self-respecting family man, and, in his said occupation and profession as a leader,” he added.
According to his plaint presented before the Milimani Commercial Courts, on Tuesday, September 29, the MP’s suit centres on a 41-minute KTN News bulletin aired during the 7 pm and 9 pm news on September 6, 2026, with the MP claiming the report suggested that the violence was planned, organised, and mobilised before the clashes broke out.
The lawmaker alleges that the September 6 publication was part of a series of reports by The Standard Group concerning the Homa Bay violence and his alleged involvement.
He cited several previous publications, including an August 17 Standard newspaper headline titled “Shame as Gladys Wanga and Kaluma Unleash Violence against Freedom,” as well as other reports published on August 18 and August 21.
According to Kaluma, the publications have injured his reputation and standing as a family man, lawyer, elected leader and Member of Parliament.
“The Plaintiff has been gravely injured in his credit, reputation, character and standing,” he stated.
Kaluma further claims that he demanded an apology and retraction from the defendants and issued a notice of his intention to take legal action, but alleges that they remained defiant and continued to publish the reports.
