A woman has died after leaping from a moving vehicle that had lost its brakes, while the passengers who stayed inside escaped alive.
The deceased has been identified as Phylis Jeruto. The incident happened at Biretwo Centre in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
Jeruto was travelling with other passengers when the vehicle suffered a complete brake failure.
The driver was reportedly left with no means of bringing it to a controlled stop. As the vehicle sped on, Jeruto made a split-second decision to jump out.
She is believed to have acted out of fear that staying on board would end far worse. The fall proved fatal, and she succumbed to the injuries she sustained when she hit the ground.
The vehicle continued along its path with the remaining passengers still inside. In a cruel twist of fate, all of them survived the ordeal.
The stark contrast between her fate and that of her fellow passengers has left the local community in grief and disbelief. Residents say the woman, who acted on instinct to protect herself, ended up paying the ultimate price.
