Nollywood is mourning one of its most respected figures, legendary Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who has died at the age of 84.
His family announced his death on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, describing him affectionately as “The Lion of Lufodo” and asking the public to respect their privacy as they come to terms with the loss.
For more than five decades, Olu Jacobs captivated audiences with his commanding presence, deep voice and remarkable ability to bring characters to life. To many Nigerians and Africans, he was more than an actor; he was a familiar face whose performances became part of their lives.
Born on July 11, 1942, to parents of Egba Alake origin, Jacobs spent his childhood in Kano, where his interest in drama and debating began to take shape. Inspired by legendary performer Hubert Ogunde, he eventually travelled to Britain in the 1960s and trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
He went on to build an impressive career on British theatre and television, appearing in productions including The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, The Professionals and The Tomorrow People. He also featured in international films before returning to Nigeria.
Back home, Jacobs became one of Nollywood’s foundational actors, appearing in more than 100 films and earning admiration for his portrayal of authoritative and memorable characters.
His personal life was equally celebrated. In 1989, he married fellow actress Joke Silva, with whom he built the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.
Jacobs received numerous honours, including the 2007 Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, the MFR national honour in 2011 and an Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
In his later years, his wife publicly disclosed that he was living with Lewy body dementia.
His passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter, but his work, students, family and generations of viewers will continue to carry his legacy forward.
