Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has given his clearest indication yet that he could make a major political move early next year, as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Wamatangi said he has already decided which political party he intends to join but will not reveal the name for now. He told residents in Limuru East that he plans to announce his political plans later, asking them to focus on his development record instead of party politics.
The governor said residents should judge him by the work his administration has done, including roads, agriculture and other development programmes. He argued that political affiliation should not be the main basis for assessing his leadership.
Wamatangi’s comments have nevertheless increased speculation about his next political home. The governor has increasingly distanced himself from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the party on whose ticket he won the Kiambu governorship in 2022.
He has previously indicated that he does not want to return to what he described as a party that does not respect its leaders and supporters. Recent reports have therefore linked his political future to the wider realignment taking place in the Mt Kenya region.
While Wamatangi has not disclosed the name of his preferred party, his decision is expected to attract significant attention because Kiambu remains an important political county with a large electorate.
The governor has also sought to separate his development agenda from the early 2027 campaign. He said he wants residents to question him about unfinished projects and service delivery before asking about elections.
His planned announcement could therefore become an important moment in Kiambu politics. It may clarify whether he will join an existing opposition or regional political formation, establish a different alliance, or pursue another route.
For now, Wamatangi is keeping his cards close to his chest. His promise to reveal his political plans around January has left political parties and supporters waiting for the next chapter in his political journey.
