Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who died on Monday, September 7, while receiving treatment in Zanzibar.
Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi officially announced the death, confirming that the former first gentleman had been undergoing treatment for a heart condition before his death.
According to the announcement, funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, a village in Zanzibar, where preparations are expected to bring together family members, government officials and mourners.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan lived a relatively private life despite being married to one of Tanzania’s most powerful political figures. He largely avoided political activities and public engagements.
His decision to remain away from the political spotlight meant that many Tanzanians knew little about his personal life, even after his wife rose to the presidency.
Ameir was an agriculturalist by profession and built his career around agriculture rather than politics. He was also an academic and had retired before his death.
