On Wednesday morning, Kamene and Jalas hosted Wanjiru Gikonyo, the national coordinator from TISA (The Institute of Social Accountability)
Gikonyo left her hosts and Kiss FM listeners speechless as she delved deep into public debt and how the country is doing on that front.
How are we doing as a nation debt-wise?
“We are doing very badly we are part of a coalition calling ourselves ‘Okoa uchumi’ because we saw that we are in a bad debt. It is an economic crisis and our aim is to look for solutions,” she said.
She added,
Our country is in a real time crisis. We borrow expensively and irresponsibly. Right now the SGR is losing 200 million per day, and yet we are still paying the debt!
We borrowed from China to put money into SGR without asking whether the SGR will generate that money to repay the debt.
Wanjiru says China is not the problem but the government officials who negotiated the loan contract on behalf of Kenyans.
China aren’t part of Paris group because that group you cannot Shylock people. The Paris group wanted to protect people.
This is why we have to come together. China isn’t the only one there are other bad investments.
Wanjiru says she Okoa seeks to get citizen engaged by education and to do that, they have organized a procession on Thursday from 10am to noon to mark World’s anti corruption day at Jeevanjee garden.
