President William Ruto has sent a message of condolence to the Norwegian Royal Family following the reported death of King Harald V, describing the monarch as an exceptional leader whose legacy of service, dignity and national unity will endure.
In a message dated August 29, 2026, Ruto extended his condolences to Queen Sonja, the Royal Family, the Norwegian Government and the people of Norway on behalf of the Government and people of Kenya, as well as his own family.
Ruto described King Harald’s death as a profound loss, praising the late monarch for a life defined by duty, dignity, humility and unwavering devotion to the Norwegian people.
The President noted that King Harald leaves behind a remarkable legacy spanning more than 35 years on the Norwegian throne, during which he presided over a period of major social and global transformation.
According to Ruto, the King’s reign reflected Norway’s commitment to democracy, good governance, human rights, peace, sustainable development and international solidarity, while strengthening national unity and constitutional duty.
Ruto also paid tribute to King Harald’s role beyond Norway, saying the monarch championed an outward-looking Norway committed to dialogue, human dignity, international cooperation and multilateralism across Europe, Africa and the wider world.
For Kenya, the passing carries a particularly personal significance for Ruto, coming less than three months after his historic state visit to Norway on June 8 and 9, 2026—the first visit to Norway by a Kenyan Head of State.
Ruto recalled the hospitality extended to his delegation during the visit, including his audience with Crown Prince Haakon at the Royal Palace, as well as the warmth and friendship that characterised Kenya’s engagements with Norwegian leaders and citizens.
The President further highlighted the growing relationship between Kenya and Norway, citing cooperation in peace and security, climate action, maritime affairs and the blue economy, trade and investment, sustainable development, and multilateral cooperation.
Ruto said the late King’s legacy would continue to influence the relationship between the two countries, pledging that Kenya would honour his memory by strengthening the friendship between the Kenyan and Norwegian peoples.
“As Norway mourns and enters a new chapter in its national history, Kenya stands with the Royal Family, Government and people of Norway,” Ruto said, offering strength and consolation to Queen Sonja, the Royal Family and the Norwegian people during their period of mourning.
The President concluded his message by wishing King Harald V eternal rest and honouring a reign he described as marked by dignity, unity and humanity.
