Prominent Ugandan politician Abraham Luzzi has advised President Yoweri Museveni to prepare several possible successors instead of leaving Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba as the only clear option.

Luzzi made the call while warning that putting all succession expectations around one person could create unnecessary pressure and risks for both Muhoozi and the country.

In his message, Luzzi described Museveni as his “champion” and urged him to start planning for succession while there is still time to do so peacefully.

He proposed that NRM and Museveni’s team should prepare a list of about ten capable leaders who could take responsibility in the future.

He said these leaders should be known publicly, mentored and prepared to serve when their time comes.

According to Luzzi, Gen. Muhoozi could remain number one on that list if that is the direction chosen by the NRM leadership. But he argued that there should still be other names ready behind him.

Luzzi said this wouldn’t be about creating rivals for Muhoozi. Instead, he believes having a clear line of possible successors could reduce the risk of power struggles, especially during a sudden political crisis.

He also said the future leaders could include members of Museveni’s family alongside trusted allies.

“Leadership should not depend on one person, one family or one moment,” Luzzi said, calling on Museveni to “prepare the next ten.”

Luzzi’s message comes as succession remains one of Uganda’s most closely discussed political issues.
