Kenyan singer David Kamoni Mathenge, popularly known as Nameless, has revealed the personal story behind the durag, headgear and shades that have become closely associated with his public image.

Speaking about his early years in music on Friday, August 14, 2026, Nameless said shyness played a major role in shaping the identity that fans eventually came to recognise.

The singer explained that he was naturally reserved and initially found it difficult to stand before large crowds and deal with the attention that came with performing.

His discomfort was so strong that it also influenced the stage name he adopted.

Nameless said he chose the name because he wanted to maintain a level of anonymity while testing whether his music career would succeed.

He reasoned that if the career failed, people would not easily connect the music to his real identity.

The decision, however, had an unexpected outcome: the temporary name became permanent and eventually turned into one of the most recognisable identities in Kenyan music.

Nameless also revealed that he initially used a mask to help him overcome his nervousness during performances.

According to the singer, covering his face gave him a psychological sense of security and made it easier for him to step onto a stage and perform in front of an audience.

Over time, the mask evolved into the combination of headgear and eyewear that became part of his stage appearance.

Rather than sticking to one specific item, Nameless said he experimented with different forms of headgear, including durags and kufis, while maintaining the broader concept of covering his head and wearing eyewear.

What began as a coping mechanism therefore gradually developed into a deliberate part of his artistic identity.

Nameless also acknowledged that he is short-sighted, but stressed that his distinctive appearance has grown beyond a practical choice.

For many fans, the shades and headgear are now strongly associated with the singer himself.

His revelation offers a different perspective on celebrity branding, showing how an artist’s public image can sometimes emerge from a very personal experience.

In Nameless’ case, an attempt to manage shyness and protect his anonymity eventually became one of the visual trademarks of his music career.

The singer’s story also highlights how seemingly small decisions made at the beginning of a career can develop into lasting elements of an artist’s identity.
