It appears that the saga sorrounding the macabre killing of Mt. Elgon politician Nathan Masai Wasama on the night of August 8, 2026 in Tuikut Trading Centre, Chepatis, Bungoma County, is not coming to an end soon.
From accusations and counter-accusations traded by residents, the area Member of Parliament (MP) Fred Kapondi, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, to wild allegations of a possible love triangle and political rivalry as the motive, and 18 guns found in the lawmaker’s residents, the saga continues…
In a press statement at Parliament buildings on Thursday, August 13, MP Kapondi vehemently distanced himself from the shooting death of Wasama, warning Gachagua to tame “your loose” mouth.
But Kapondi’s meeting with Parliamentary journalists was not your normal press briefing, as the man from Bukonoi Village released a bombshell— that Wasama might have been brutally murdered as a result of a dangerous love triangle.
“What the bloggers and political aspirants are trying to hide, the late was found with somebody’s wife… the wife to a security guard in Mlatiwa Secondary School. It is said he met his death after an act with the woman. He was going to take a shower outside his duka, and that is why he as found completely nakes!” Kapondi said.
And the legislator did not mince his words, even going a step further by dropping specific names of people involved in the alleged love triangle.
Husband comes out
But a few hours after the explosive media briefing by the MP, the husband of the woman in question came out, trooping to the defence of his dear wife.
The man went further to say that he enjoyed a healthy relationship with the deceased.
“Councillor Wasama tumekuwa majirani na yeye kwa muda mrefu. Hatujagombana hata kidogo, amekuwa rafiki wangu wa karibu. Lakini sijakuwa na shida na yeye.”
5 arrested over the murder
Police have since arrested five suspects even as investigations into the murder continue in earnest.
At first, detectives acted on intelligence leads to arrest three suspects—identified as Oscar Koech Sakong, Wycliffe Chesubei Ngeiwa (alias Chota), and Geoffrey Makwere Masai—following raids from their hideouts within Cheptais.
During the raid in Marigo village, the detectives discovered a military-style smoke jacket, a stun grenade, three axes, a crowbar, three folding pangas, two pangas, two knives, five arrows, three motorcycles, two mobile phones and an iPod.
Two more suspects would later surrender to the police. Robert Kimutai Psisei, alias Robert Miti, surrendered at Cheptais Police Station and was escorted to Sirisia Police Station for processing.
Another suspect, Brian Chongin Kaos, surrendered at Chwele Police Station, where he was taken into custody.
“The two suspects are among those in custody as detectives continue with investigations, with all suspects expected to be arraigned in court to face the law once investigations are complete,” the DCI stated.
