A political disagreement has emerged within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) after Alego Usonga Member of Parliament Sam Atandi responded to remarks made by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna concerning the age and health challenges of veteran politician Oburu Oginga.

Atandi appeared to caution Sifuna against making insensitive comments about elderly political leaders, stressing that reaching old age is a blessing that many people hope to experience. In his response, Atandi said, “Old age is the only thing we all pray for. Unfortunately, God does not give it to everyone.”

The statement was widely interpreted as a direct response to comments Sifuna made in Kitui while discussing the role of elderly politicians in the country’s political affairs. His remarks came after Oburu reportedly experienced difficulties while attempting to read a written speech because of eyesight problems.

Addressing the issue, Sifuna said, “Kwa heshima kubwa, tutatembea na wazee wenye wanatuheshimu. Wale ambao wanatudharau, wakae nyumbani.”

The Nairobi senator also sought to clarify his position by arguing that there was nothing inherently wrong with supporting older people. He questioned whether providing elderly leaders with basic assistance, such as bringing them milk, should be viewed negatively.

However, Atandi’s reaction shifted the discussion toward broader questions about how elderly leaders should be treated, particularly when political disagreements arise. His remarks have generated debate among political observers and members of the public, with opinions divided over whether Sifuna’s comments amounted to legitimate political criticism or crossed a line given Oburu’s age and reported difficulties with his eyesight.

Oburu is a veteran Kenyan politician and a prominent member of ODM. He is also the elder brother of the late opposition leader Raila Odinga and has remained active in the country’s political landscape.

The exchange has therefore added to the ongoing political tensions within ODM, while also raising questions about respect, dignity and compassion toward senior political figures.

The controversy comes at a time when political alliances and disagreements continue to shape discussions within the opposition camp. What began as a disagreement over comments concerning elderly politicians has consequently developed into a wider debate about political conduct and the responsibility of leaders to exercise sensitivity when discussing matters involving age and health.
