Robert Alai has reacted after gospel musician Guardian Angel performed for President William Ruto and other delegates during the launch of the Vision “Beyond 2030” event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
Alai shared a post showing Guardian Angel performing before the gathering and appeared to question whether critics would now turn against the musician because of his appearance at the event.
“Want him cancelled now? LOL…” Alai wrote, in a short message that has since attracted attention online.
His comment appears to be aimed at people who have previously called for artists or public figures to be rejected because of their association with political leaders.
Alai did not directly name the people he was addressing in the post.
The appearance also puts Guardian Angel in the spotlight because he has previously performed at a major Ruto event.
During President Ruto’s inauguration at Kasarani Stadium in September 2022, Guardian Angel was among the gospel artists who performed during the celebrations.
Citizen Digital reported that his song was part of the musical performances at the ceremony.
This shows that the singer’s appearance at a Ruto-linked event is not entirely new.
Alai’s latest post therefore appears to be more about the reaction that Guardian Angel’s performance may generate than the performance itself.
Whether Kenyans will criticize or support the musician remains a matter of public opinion.
For now, the performance has added another talking point to the ongoing conversation about musicians, politics and public events in Kenya.
