A multimillion-shilling road project in Ol Kalou Constituency has been suspended, triggering heated debate on social media just days after the area’s recent by-election.
According to former Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, the Chinese contractor withdrew from the site after allegedly receiving threats from local residents. Kuria revealed the development via a reliable news source on Facebook, pointing to hostility toward the contractor as the immediate cause for the stoppage.
However, the timing of the suspension has fuelled widespread speculation. Many Kenyans on social platforms have interpreted the move as political retaliation, arguing that the government is punishing Ol Kalou residents for rejecting the UDA candidate, Samuel Muchina, in the just‑concluded polls. A section of netizens condemned the administration, accusing it of weaponising development projects to coerce voter behaviour.
Others, however, have called for calm, urging authorities to investigate the alleged threats against the contractor rather than rushing to political conclusions. Neither the contractor nor the national government has issued an official statement on the matter at the time of reporting.
The suspension now leaves the constituency’s infrastructure plans in limbo, with residents and leaders alike awaiting clarity on whether and when work will resume.
