At least two people have been confirmed dead while dozens of others sustained injuries after a bus carrying students from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) was involved in a road accident along the Awasi–Ahero highway in Nyando, Kisumu County.
The students were travelling from Mombasa to Kisumu in a convoy to attend the burial of former TUM student leader Elvis Otieno, popularly known as “Beast”, whose funeral is set to take place on Saturday August 8,2026.
The bus was one of five transporting mourners from the Coast region when it reportedly lost control, according to preliminary reports.
Emergency response
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and evacuated the injured to nearby health facilities. Several victims were taken to Lisa Hospital in Namba Okana for treatment, while those with critical injuries were referred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
In a statement, Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir confirmed that two people had lost their lives in the crash, adding that several passengers were receiving medical attention.
He said county authorities had coordinated emergency response efforts by dispatching ambulances to assist in evacuating the injured from the accident scene.
Nassir appealed to members of the public, particularly the TUM fraternity and residents of Mombasa, to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information as investigations continue.
He noted that the identities of those affected, together with details of their medical condition, would only be released after official confirmation and notification of their families.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the accident, their families and friends,” Nassir said.
Orengo mourns
Siaya Governor James Orengo also mourned the victims, describing the incident as a devastating tragedy involving young people who had travelled to honour the memory of a fellow student.
In a message shared on his Facebook account, Orengo said the students had embarked on a journey of solidarity but were instead met with tragedy.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of several university students along the Awasi–Ahero highway. To the grieving families, friends and the entire TUM comrade fraternity, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time, “he said.
