Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has thrown his support behind former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s approach to opposition politics, urging leaders within the United Opposition to prioritise grassroots mobilisation as they prepare for the 2027 General Election.
In a statement shared on his X account on Thursday, August 6, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator argued that electoral success is determined by the number of votes a candidate secures rather than the prominence of political allies. He maintained that every opposition leader must actively engage with citizens and campaign across the country instead of relying on well-known political figures to deliver votes.
Amisi reflected on former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s previous presidential bids, suggesting that one of the opposition’s biggest mistakes was surrounding itself with influential leaders who enjoyed national recognition but failed to convert their popularity into actual votes at the ballot box. According to the MP, this strategy significantly contributed to Raila’s repeated electoral defeats.
Backing Gachagua’s position, Amisi stressed that politics is ultimately a game of numbers and that every member of the opposition coalition has a responsibility to build support at the grassroots level. He warned that no politician should expect financial backing or votes without investing time and effort in reaching out to the electorate and selling the coalition’s agenda.
The Saboti lawmaker called on opposition leaders to face political realities and commit themselves to vigorous campaigns across the country before it is too late. He argued that success in the 2027 elections will depend on the ability of individual leaders to mobilise supporters rather than depending solely on high-profile political endorsements.
