A recent online opinion poll has sparked fresh political discussion after indicating that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna enjoys strong public backing in a hypothetical presidential race against President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The survey, conducted by Politrack Africa, attracted 123,110 participants who were asked to choose between the two leaders in a simulated presidential contest. According to the published results, Sifuna secured 69,286 votes, representing 56.3 percent of the responses, while President Ruto received 53,824 votes, equivalent to 43.7 percent. The outcome placed the Nairobi senator ahead by more than 12 percentage points.
The findings come at a time when Sifuna has continued to attract national attention through his outspoken criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration and his growing association with the Linda Mwananchi movement. Although he has not declared any intention to contest the presidency, his name has increasingly featured in discussions about potential opposition candidates for the 2027 election.
The poll has also revived debate over the opposition’s strategy ahead of the next general election. Some supporters believe opposition parties should unite behind a single presidential candidate, arguing that a common flag bearer would improve their chances of mounting a strong challenge against the ruling coalition.
Despite the results, political analysts caution that online opinion polls should be interpreted carefully. They note that such surveys rely on voluntary participation and primarily capture the views of internet users, making them less representative of the broader electorate. Organized online campaigns can also influence the final outcome.
Even with those limitations, the poll reflects Sifuna’s rising political visibility and the growing interest in the opposition’s leadership ahead of the next election. As political parties continue to form alliances and prepare their campaign strategies, competition for the opposition’s presidential ticket is expected to intensify, with several prominent leaders likely to emerge before the 2027 General Election.
