Two heartbreaking tragedies involving young children have left families and communities in Embu and Mombasa counties mourning after two innocent lives were cut short in separate accidents on Friday.
In the first incident, a five-year-old boy tragically lost his life after becoming trapped in a window at the police residential quarters in Siakago, Mbeere North Sub-county, Embu County.
According to police, the distressing incident was reported on Friday evening after residents noticed a young child hanging motionless outside the living room window of a house occupied by a police officer. Officers rushed to the scene only to discover the heartbreaking sight of the boy suspended outside a second-floor window.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the child’s hooded sweatshirt had become caught on the window, leaving him hanging helplessly. Officers who responded observed saliva flowing from the boy’s mouth, an indication that he was already in critical condition by the time he was found.
The deceased, identified as Ryan, had reportedly been inside the house playing with his two siblings while their mother was away on official duty. It remains unclear how he ended up at the window, and investigators are working to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal accident.
Ryan was rushed to Queens and Kings Hospital in Siakago in a desperate effort to save his life. Sadly, medical personnel pronounced him dead upon arrival.
His body was later transferred to Embu Level 5 Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination as police continue with investigations into the tragic incident.
In a separate tragedy hundreds of kilometres away, another family was thrown into mourning after a three-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool at Mvita Primary School in Majengo, Mombasa County.
Police said the incident was reported at around 6:40 p.m. by a relative who identified the deceased as her nephew, Asmar Abdinasir. According to her account, the little boy had been swimming alongside other children in the school’s swimming pool when the tragedy occurred.
Moments later, an alarm was raised after it became apparent that the child was in distress. Those present quickly pulled him out of the water and rushed him to MEWA Hospital, hoping doctors would save his life. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the boy was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Following the incident, officers from Makupa Police Station, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers visited both the swimming pool and the hospital mortuary to begin investigations.
Initial examinations found no visible external injuries on the child’s body, findings that are consistent with suspected drowning. His body was later moved to Pandya Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched investigations into both incidents to establish the full circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The two heartbreaking accidents have once again highlighted the importance of constant supervision of young children, especially around windows, elevated buildings, and swimming pools. As investigations continue, two families are left grieving unimaginable losses, while their communities mourn the lives of children whose futures were tragically cut short.
