The 63-year-old, whose career in the arts industry spanned more than four decades, died last Wednesday due to diabetes-related complications.
Family, friends and members of the arts industry celebrated his life, remembering him for his humility, passion and dedication.
Sebogodi’s wife, Rosina Semenya, said she accepts his passing as God’s will.
Her tribute was read by their daughter, Malashi Semenya, who said he was intentional about love and commitment, and never went a day without expressing how much he loved his family.
“You never hesitated about what you wanted, you never said you want a girlfriend, you said you want a wife and you saw that woman in me. From that day on, no matter where you were in the world I never went to bed without you telling me how much you love me”, Semenya said.
His children described him as a loving, vibrant and humorous man who loved them unconditionally.
In an emotional tribute, his daughter Thabang Sebogodi said her father was her first love, best friend and hero.
She says he taught her the true meaning of unconditional love, describing him as a man with a big heart, a contagious laugh and an unforgettable presence.
She added that one of the greatest gifts he gave her was his time, recalling fond memories of spontaneous road trips.
A friend and former co-star Katlego Danke described Sebogodi as a man who lived with absolute exuberance.
Danke worked with him, on SABC 1’s popular soapie, Generations.
“He made sure that whether it was singing, speaking, inspiring the youth, whether it was acting, he did it to fullest extent. Not only that but he also touched the hearts of every single person he came across”, Danke said.
Limpopo MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture Jerry Maseko delivered the eulogy on behalf of Premier Doctor Phophi Ramathuba.
He described Sebogodi as more than a performer, saying he was a nation builder who used his art to preserve identity, promote culture and strengthen social cohesion.
Maseko added that Sebogodi resisted efforts to erode African identity, using his craft as a powerful tool to protect language, tradition and heritage.
“Seputla understood that if anyone seeks to take away your humanity, they begin by taking away your tradition.
“They ridicule your language and degrade your traditions. They convince you to reject your own heritage. Seputla resisted that project with the most powerful instrument he possessed: his art”.
