Mbs Road

Motorists are experiencing heavy traffic along Mombasa Road, with congestion stretching from Mlolongo to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Several road users say traffic has come to a standstill, with some reporting they have remained in the same location for more than one hour and 20 minutes.

The congestion has affected private vehicles, matatus, buses, lorries and airport-bound traffic using one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors.

By the time of publication, the cause of the traffic jam had not been confirmed. No official statement had been issued explaining the disruption.

Mombasa Road is the main link between Nairobi and towns such as Mlolongo, Athi River and Kitengela. It also serves JKIA and the Inland Container Depot, making it one of the country’s busiest highways. Any disruption along the route quickly affects thousands of commuters, businesses and cargo transport.

Passengers travelling to the airport are likely to experience delays, while commuters heading into or out of Nairobi are also facing longer travel times than usual.

Traffic congestion on Mombasa Road is commonly caused by road accidents, broken-down vehicles, roadworks or a sharp increase in traffic volumes. However, the reason for the current gridlock remains unknown.

Motorists planning to use the highway are advised to check traffic updates before travelling and consider alternative routes where possible until the situation improves.

Drivers already caught in the traffic are encouraged to remain patient, follow police or traffic marshals’ directions where present and avoid driving on the wrong side of the road, which can worsen congestion and slow emergency response.

Traffic is expected to ease once the cause of the disruption is identified and cleared. Authorities are expected to provide further information after assessing the situation.
