A video shared on social media has drawn widespread attention after showing a woman using a wheelchair as she made her way along Nairobi’s busy Thika Superhighway while travelling to and from work in the Central Business District (CBD).

The clip,which was posted on social media quickly attracted thousands of views and sparked conversations about the daily challenges faced by people living with disabilities in Kenya.

The post stated that the woman uses the Thika Superhighway every day as she travels between her home and workplace in Nairobi CBD.

The short video shows the woman moving along the roadside in her wheelchair while wearing a reflective safety vest.

Heavy traffic,including matatus,private cars and other vehicles can be seen passing close to her as she continues her journey.The reflective vest appears to improve her visibility to motorists, especially during low light conditions.

The footage has attracted significant attention online with many people expressing concern about the risks of travelling on one of Nairobi’s busiest highways in a wheelchair.

 

Others described the woman’s daily commute as an example of determination and resilience despite the difficult conditions she faces.

The Thika Superhighway is one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors,linking Nairobi with several residential and commercial areas including Kasarani,Roysambu,Githurai,Kahawa,Ruiru,Juja and Thika.

Thousands of commuters use the road every day to travel to and from work.while the highway also carries a high volume of public service vehicles and commercial traffic.

The viral video has also renewed discussion about the accessibility of transport systems and road infrastructure for people with disabilities.

Disability rights advocates have long called for improved pedestrian walkways,safer crossings, accessible public transport and better facilities that allow people living with disabilities to travel independently.
