Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has acknowledged the growing political influence of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying Wamunyoro remains the region’s strongest political voice because of its significant impact on public opinion and regional politics.

Kang’ata made the remarks while discussing the political landscape in the Mt Kenya region, where Gachagua continues to command considerable support despite leaving government following his impeachment as deputy president.

According to the governor, Wamunyoro has become a powerful political symbol that resonates with many residents, making it difficult for leaders to ignore its influence during important political conversations and decisions.

He noted that political leaders seeking support across the region must recognize the weight carried by Gachagua’s voice, regardless of their political affiliations or personal differences with the former deputy president.

Kang’ata emphasized that political influence should be measured by the ability to shape public opinion, mobilize supporters, and influence debate rather than by holding a government office alone.

His comments come amid heightened political activity in Mt Kenya as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election and seek to strengthen their influence across the vote-rich region.

The governor maintained that understanding the region’s political dynamics is essential for anyone hoping to build meaningful alliances and earn the confidence of local voters in future contests.

Observers believe Kang’ata’s statement reflects the evolving balance of power within Mt Kenya politics, where competing camps continue to court residents through rallies, development agendas, and grassroots mobilization.

The remarks are expected to spark fresh debate among allies of President William Ruto and opposition figures over who truly commands the region’s political direction.

As political alignments continue shifting, Kang’ata’s assessment highlights the enduring significance of Wamunyoro as a major force shaping conversations, strategies, and electoral calculations throughout the Mt Kenya region.
