Kalekye

Media personality Kalekye Mumo has opened up about the biggest challenge she faced while filming the upcoming movie Film Tides, revealing that it had nothing to do with portraying a paediatric surgeon.

The celebrated TV host and communications professional said the most demanding part of the role was acting in Swahili, a language she rarely uses in her professional career despite being fluent in it.

Speaking about her experience on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Kalekye described the project as one that pushed her beyond her comfort zone and allowed her to grow both personally and professionally.

Although playing a paediatric surgeon required her to step into an unfamiliar profession, she explained that learning and delivering dialogue naturally in Swahili proved to be an even greater challenge.

“There are roles that come naturally, and then there are roles that challenge you in all the right ways,” Kalekye shared.

She disclosed that she joined the production last year as a supporting actress, embracing an opportunity to expand her career beyond television presenting, moderating events, coaching and storytelling.

According to Kalekye, many Kenyans associate her with English-language broadcasting, making the transition to a Swahili-speaking character a completely different experience.

“The interesting part wasn’t the medical role that stretched me most. It was acting in Swahili,” she explained.

She noted that the experience required her to trust her abilities in a new way while accepting the discomfort that often comes with learning new skills.

Kalekye said stepping into a different linguistic and artistic space reminded her that growth is rarely comfortable but is always worthwhile. She encouraged others to embrace opportunities that challenge them instead of remaining within familiar territory.

Reflecting on the production, she expressed gratitude for accepting the role, saying it became one of the most rewarding experiences of her acting journey.

“Most people know me for my work in English hosting, moderating, coaching and storytelling. But this role asked me to lean into something different, trust myself differently and embrace the discomfort that comes with growth,” she said.

The media personality also praised the cast and production team, describing the project as a beautiful story brought to life through teamwork and dedication.

She expressed excitement ahead of the film’s release and said she looks forward to audiences experiencing the work the entire cast and crew invested in the production.

Kalekye has increasingly diversified her career in recent years, balancing media, public speaking, coaching and acting.

Her latest role in Film Tides marks another milestone as she continues exploring new creative opportunities while inspiring others to embrace challenges that foster personal and professional growth.
