A driver lost his life after a passenger bus travelling from Garissa was involved in a fiery road accident near Mwingi in Kitui County early Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred near Kasevi Primary School in Kivou Location, about five kilometres from Mwingi town, when an Ambasa Coach bus collided with a saloon car along the busy Nairobi-Garissa Highway.According to authorities, the driver of the saloon car died at the scene.
Another occupant of the vehicle sustained injuries and was rushed for medical attention. Several passengers aboard the bus also suffered minor injuries after the vehicle caught fire following the collision.
The bus, which was heading towards Nairobi from Garissa, was completely destroyed by the blaze, raising concerns among rescuers and local residents who rushed to the scene shortly after the accident.
Kivou Location Chief Alice Mutai confirmed the incident and stated that some passengers escaped with minor injuries despite the bus being engulfed in flames after the impact.
Emergency teams responded swiftly and transferred the injured to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Medical personnel at Mwingi Level 4 Referral Hospital were placed on alert to receive casualties from the crash.The accident was also confirmed by Mwingi Police Base Commander Lucy Achieng, who said investigations had commenced to establish the circumstances that led to the collision.
The tragedy once again highlights the dangers on the Nairobi-Garissa highway, a route that has witnessed several serious accidents in recent years.
Police have urged motorists to exercise caution as investigations into the latest crash continue.
Authorities are expected to release additional details once assessments and enquiries are completed.
