Uasin Gishu nominated MCA Reginah Chumba has been discharged from hospital and returned home after surviving a horrific nine-vehicle accident along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

The crash occurred in the Karai area on June 16 and involved multiple vehicles. The accident claimed the life of a senior police officer, John Rioba, who served as the Nyandarua County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO). Preliminary reports indicated that heavy rainfall and poor visibility may have contributed to the collision.

Chumba, who represents persons living with disabilities in the county assembly, was among five people travelling together when the accident happened. While she sustained chest injuries and was admitted to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, the other occupants, including her driver, escaped without serious injuries after receiving medical assessment.

Speaking after her discharge, Chumba thanked God for sparing their lives during the terrifying incident.

“I thank Almighty God for His grace, protection and mercy after surviving the tragic accident. Together with four others, including my driver, we are grateful that our lives were spared,” she said.

The MCA received an emotional welcome at Eldoret International Airport after returning home. Supporters gathered to receive her with flowers, hugs and messages of encouragement as she arrived in her wheelchair.

Chumba also expressed gratitude to her family, friends, colleagues in the Uasin Gishu County Assembly, medical staff, and Kenyans who supported her through prayers and messages during her recovery.

“We have now recovered and been discharged to continue resting at home. I sincerely appreciate everyone who stood with us through prayers, visits, messages and moral support during this challenging time. Your love and encouragement have given me strength,” she said.

Following her ordeal, the MCA called on the Ministry of Transport to improve safety on major highways by introducing separate lanes for heavy commercial trucks and smaller vehicles.

According to Chumba, segregating traffic could help reduce accidents and save lives on some of the country’s most dangerous roads.

“I call upon the Ministry of Transport to consider separating lanes for heavy trucks and smaller vehicles on major highways to enhance road safety and help reduce accidents,” she urged.

The Karai section of the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway has long been considered a high-risk area, with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) previously identifying it as a road accident black spot due to numerous fatal crashes recorded there over the years.

Chumba, who is reportedly eyeing the Uasin Gishu Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election, said her experience had reinforced the urgent need for stronger road safety measures across the country.
