A Kenyan man has shared a heartbreaking account of how he lost his wife of six years and their two sons after she reportedly reunited with her former husband who had returned from the United States. The emotional story has sparked reactions online, highlighting painful realities of love, marriage breakdowns, and cultural expectations.
Sam (not real name) said he met Mary (not real name) at a church youth event in 2009, where they exchanged contacts and developed a close friendship that later turned into love. After about a year, he proposed, and they married in a church ceremony in 2010. The couple later had two sons and initially enjoyed a stable family life before problems began in 2016 when his wife’s behaviour changed.
He recalled that she became distant, stopped responding to calls and withdrew emotionally despite his efforts to save the marriage. He later learned her former husband, who had paid dowry, had returned from the US and re-entered her life. Elders ruled that, under cultural traditions, she was still considered his wife despite the church marriage and certificate. She then left with their two sons, leaving Sam devastated and powerless.
He said the separation left him emotionally broken and struggling to cope, turning to alcohol and battling depression. He also expressed pain that his children are now culturally recognised under his ex-wife’s former marriage, though he continues to support them. Years later, he admits he still fears relationships and struggles with trust, but hopes to rebuild his life and find peace.
