Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has made changes in the leadership of the National Police Service, appointing Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Johana Kiplangat Tonui as the new Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU).

The changes were announced in a notice approved by the National Police Service Board and took effect immediately.

Before his appointment, Tonui served at the Directorate of Operations within the Kenya Police Service. He succeeds AIG Fredrick Egesa Nyongesa, who has been moved to the position of Deputy Commandant of the GSU.

Nyongesa will continue serving within the unit, where he will assist in overseeing operations, personnel management and logistical matters.

In another change, AIG Paul Maingo Mumo has been appointed Director of the Internal Affairs Unit. Mumo previously served at the Directorate of Quality Assurance within the Kenya Police Service.

As GSU Commandant, Tonui will be responsible for leading the unit’s operations, including security deployments, counter-terrorism assignments and the protection of key government installations.

Mumo’s new role at the Internal Affairs Unit will involve handling investigations into complaints against police officers and ensuring adherence to professional standards within the service.

The appointments are part of the latest leadership changes within the National Police Service and take effect immediately.
