Residents of Naivasha are mourning the death of Jane Wanjiru, a 31-year-old mobile money operator whose body was discovered near Delamere Farm along the Nakuru–Nairobi highway.
The tragic incident has sparked renewed concern about violence against women and prompted calls for a thorough investigation to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
According to investigators, a post-mortem examination established that Wanjiru died after being strangled. Authorities also indicated that evidence gathered during the examination suggests she was subjected to sexual assault before her death.
The autopsy was conducted at Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary. Speaking on the case, Isaac Kiama said the findings provided important clues that could assist detectives as they continue their investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Wanjiru, who hailed from Kinangop in Nyandarua County, was married to a member of the Kenya Defence Forces stationed in Gilgil. Reports indicate that she had spent time with friends at an entertainment venue in Gilgil before she was later found dead.
Her body was discovered by residents heading to work, a few kilometres from Naivasha town. Detectives suspect that the killing may have occurred at a different location before her body was abandoned near the highway.
As part of ongoing investigations, police are reviewing her recent communications and movements in an effort to identify individuals who may have interacted with her shortly before her death. Investigators have assured the family that all available leads are being pursued.
Friends and relatives have described Wanjiru as a hardworking, friendly, and dedicated woman whose death has left a painful void in the lives of those who knew her. One of her close friends, Mary Maina, said the family is determined to see justice served and hopes investigators will uncover the truth.
The case has added to growing concerns about violence against women in the region. Local leaders, including Jayne Kihara, have condemned the killing and urged law enforcement agencies to expedite investigations and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Police say inquiries remain ongoing as detectives work to establish the full circumstances surrounding Wanjiru’s death.
