The new Presidential Escort Unit commander William Sawe has made sweeping changes to President William Ruto’s security moments after taking over.
Sawe replaced Noah Maiyo who was recalled to police headquarters after a Sunday security breach in Kilifi County.
Maiyo was in-charge of Ruto’s security since 2024. He succeeded William Oloonkishu Yiampoy in the position.
Until his appointment as head of Ruto’s security, Sawe served as the commanding officer, Recce Squad company in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
He had previously served as the director of operations at GSU headquarters before being moved to lead the elite GSU unit in late 2025. He succeeded Godhard Kamau as Recce Squad commander.
In the new changes by Sawe, the new PEU commander asked for the deployment of more GSU officers to guard the President.
Further, Sawe has called for the creation of more distance between President Ruto and the general public as a way to guarantee him more security.
