Moses Kuria, the former Trade Cabinet Secretary, has ignited fresh political debate after outlining what he believes will be the decisive battleground counties in the run-up to the 2027 presidential election.
Drawing on recent data from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Kuria noted that more than 2.3 million new voters have been added to the national register. While this increase reflects significant nationwide growth, he argued that the ultimate outcome of the election will hinge on a select group of highly competitive counties where voting patterns remain unpredictable.
Kuria identified key battleground regions including Nairobi County, Nakuru County, Kajiado County, Kakamega County, Bungoma County, Vihiga County, and Trans Nzoia County. These counties, which have collectively recorded substantial numbers of newly registered voters, are considered politically dynamic and capable of influencing the final electoral outcome.
He explained that, unlike regions with historically consistent voting trends, these counties require intensive campaigning and strategic voter mobilisation. In such areas, no single political faction can rely on guaranteed support, making them critical to any successful presidential bid.
In contrast, Kuria categorized other regions as relatively stable in their voting behavior. Counties such as Kiambu County, Machakos County, Nyeri County, Murang’a County, Kisii County, and Nyamira County were highlighted as areas where political alignments tend to be more predictable.
Additionally, he pointed to several smaller counties that have recorded notable voter registration growth, suggesting they could exert a disproportionate influence despite their size.
Kuria’s assessment highlights the growing importance of targeted political strategy, indicating that focused engagement in key swing regions could ultimately determine the path to State House in the 2027 election.
