Gathoni Wamuchomba, the MP for Githunguri, has openly expressed frustration over what she describes as betrayal and hidden political dealings within the Mt Kenya leadership bloc.
In a statement shared on her Facebook page, Wamuchomba criticised the growing disconnect between public declarations of unity and alleged private political manoeuvres among key leaders. Her remarks come amid an escalating rift involving Kimani Ichung’wah and Irungu Kang’ata, following Kang’ata’s decision to exit the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The fallout has drawn attention to internal divisions within the region’s political landscape, with Wamuchomba suggesting that recent events have exposed tensions that were previously less visible. She also revisited the impeachment saga of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, expressing regret over her unwavering support at the time.
According to her, many grassroots supporters were deeply committed to defending Gachagua, emotionally investing in his leadership during the crisis. However, she now alleges that while supporters publicly stood by him, some influential leaders were quietly holding discussions aimed at positioning themselves for the deputy presidency in the event of his removal.
Wamuchomba argued that such actions reflect a troubling gap between the sacrifices of ordinary supporters and the ambitions of certain political figures. She questioned the integrity of leaders who, in her view, project loyalty in public while pursuing personal interests behind the scenes.
Her comments have intensified debate around trust, transparency, and accountability within Mt Kenya politics. Analysts say the remarks highlight the fragile nature of political alliances and the underlying power struggles shaping leadership dynamics in the region.
