Police officers in Kichinjioni area, Kilifi County, were forced to intervene and rescue a suspect accused of assaulting and killing a seven-year-old girl after an angry mob cornered him.
According to reports by Pwani FM, the suspect had reportedly hidden inside a house as furious residents surrounded the area demanding justice for the child.
Videos shared online showed a tense scene as members of the public gathered outside the house where the suspect was believed to be hiding. Police officers arrived at the scene in time and managed to rescue the suspect before escorting him to a police station for further investigations.
The suspect was arrested in connection with the death of Bernadette Keziah Matuki, whose tragic killing has shocked residents in the area.
Reports indicate that the child went missing on Monday while playing outside her home. Her family immediately launched a search after she failed to return home, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Sadly, the following morning, the girl’s lifeless body was found dumped by the roadside under disturbing circumstances.
Police officers later visited the scene and moved the body to the mortuary at Kilifi County Hospital pending a postmortem examination.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing as residents continue to demand justice for the young girl.
