The Kenyatta family home in Ichaweri, Gatundu South, Kiambu County, remains one of the most private and historically significant estates in Kenya, serving as a rural sanctuary away from the public eye and State House life.
The compound, located in the quiet hills of Ichaweri village, traces its roots back to Kenya’s founding president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, and has over time expanded into a Multi structure estate that accommodates extended family members, staff, and guests. The area is marked by wide green lawns, mature trees, and a calm rural environment, contrasting with its high profile ownership.
Security around the homestead is notably tight, with high perimeter walls, electric fencing, controlled access gates, and both private and state security personnel deployed to ensure privacy and safety. Over the years, the estate has remained largely inaccessible to the public, with only limited glimpses offered through rare accounts and historical references.
One of the most distinctive features within the compound is a private chapel, St. John the Baptist Chapel, established in honour of Jomo Kenyatta and later consecrated in 2023.The chapel is recognized for its stained glass artistry and detailed woodwork, reflecting the family’s religious and historical heritage.
Historically, the Ichaweri home has also been linked to Kenya’s independence journey. The land was once confiscated during the colonial period but was later reclaimed by the Kenyatta family after independence, reinforcing its symbolic importance.
