Ugandan singer Joshua Baraka has opened up about the realities of rising fame, personal growth, and a widely discussed encounter involving Tems during a past Blankets and Wine event.
In an exclusive interview, Baraka reflected on how his journey in music has evolved from being labelled “one to watch” to becoming a recognised name across East Africa and beyond. He credited travel and cultural exposure for reshaping both his sound and mindset.
The artist revealed that constant touring has significantly influenced his perspective on music. According to him, experiencing diverse cultures and sounds has pushed him to create music with a global audience in mind, blending different influences into his work.
Baraka also spoke candidly about personal changes, joking that he has become “a bit more chubby” due to indulging in different cuisines while travelling. He described it as a reflection of fully embracing life experiences rather than merely passing through destinations.
Beyond physical changes, the singer emphasised a deeper mental shift. He noted that his outlook on life, creativity, and decision-making has matured, shaped by interactions and experiences gained on the road over the past three years.
On performance, Baraka acknowledged the pressure that comes with representing Uganda and East Africa on international stages. He said he often feels the responsibility of being a cultural ambassador, which influences how he prepares and delivers his performances.
Despite performing at large festivals, he admitted a preference for smaller, intimate shows. He explained that such settings allow greater interaction with audiences, spontaneity, and creative freedom compared to the structured demands of major events.
Baraka further described music as a universal language embedded in every society. This belief, he said, continues to inspire him to create songs that transcend borders while staying rooted in his East African identity.
The interview also touched on his belief in fate and destiny. Baraka expressed strong conviction that life unfolds through predetermined paths, shaping encounters, opportunities, and personal growth in ways that eventually make sense over time.
