Road accidents continue to rise across Kenya, with a recent incident in Makueni County highlighting the devastating consequences. What began as a joyful family trip to attend a wedding ended in tragedy, leaving one person dead and 18 others injured.
According to authorities, the accident occurred when a matatu lost control and veered off the road while returning to Nairobi. The vehicle had been hired to transport family members and friends to a wedding ceremony in Kyuu. After successfully attending the celebration, the group was heading back when the crash happened.
Mbooni West Police Commander Benson Makumbi confirmed the details of the incident, noting that preliminary investigations revealed the vehicle was overloaded. It had a licensed capacity of 14 passengers but was reportedly carrying more than that at the time of the accident. This overcrowding is believed to have contributed to the loss of control.
Emergency response teams acted quickly, rushing the injured victims to Mbooni Hospital for urgent medical care. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was also transported to the same facility, where it is being held in the mortuary awaiting further procedures.
Authorities have once again emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic rules, especially regarding passenger limits and safe driving practices. They warned that failure to comply with these regulations continues to put lives at risk on Kenyan roads.
Investigations into the exact cause of the accident are still ongoing, as officials work to determine all contributing factors. This incident serves as a painful reminder of the need for vigilance and responsibility among both drivers and passengers to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
