Former police officer Afande Denno has opened up about his departure from the service, describing a difficult transition marked by financial strain, legal troubles, and eventual reinvention, according to reports circulating online.
Denno, who says he served for seven years, stated that he left the police force after facing pressure and what he described as a lack of recognition. According to his account, his salary was halted following a suspension, leaving him unable to sustain himself and ultimately prompting his decision to quit.
He further claimed that his stance during public protests—where he reportedly supported peaceful demonstrations while also seeking to protect both civilians and fellow officers—was misunderstood by authorities. Sources said this led to frequent transfers and disciplinary challenges during his time in service. However, no official statements from the police service confirming these claims were immediately available.
After resigning, Denno reported facing additional hardship. He alleged that he was arrested and taken to court over unspecified matters but was later released after the case failed to proceed. Independent verification of the arrest and court proceedings was not immediately available.
According to reports, Denno later turned to small-scale entrepreneurship with support from local residents in Imara Daima and Mukuru kwa Njenga. A video circulating online shows him selling boiled maize, a business he says was inspired by his wife.
He credited well-wishers for helping him restart his life, including former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, who he claims provided equipment, while others contributed stock and housing support. These contributions have not been independently verified.
Denno says he now sells approximately 400 pieces of maize daily and has employed four people. He added that he does not regret leaving the police service.
Looking ahead, he announced plans to vie for a Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat in 2027, stating that he aims to focus on youth reform and community development, according to his remarks.
