The Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) has cautioned students against enrolling in unaccredited institutions offering nursing courses.
NCK has singled out the Kisumu-based Northlands International Medical Training College (NIMTC) as one of the schools offering nursing courses without the council’s authorisation.
The council, in a public notice issued on Monday evening, said it had received information that the college in Sondu town on the Kisii-Kisumu Road was offering several courses which its not licenced to provide.
Some of the courses the NIMTC are not recognised in the country according to the regulator.
“Further, we caution the public that nurse aid or nursing assistant training is not a recognised programme by the Nursing Council of Kenya,” NCK said.
“Any course offered without NCK’s approval is not recognised and does not meet the required standards of training and professional practice.”
The college is yet to respond to the claims. On Tuesday morning, the college indicated it will issue a statement later following our telephone inquiry placed to its official telephone contacts.
“You will receive a response tomorrow from the director,” an official of the college who identified himself as James Maina said on phone.
The NCK has now cautioned prospective students to check the list of approved institutions and programmes that is available on the council’s official website.
“We urge prospective students and their guardians to verify the accreditation status of any institution before enrolling in any nursing or midwifery programme,” the council said.
NIMTC describes itself as a registered TVET Institution founded in 2019 where it started its journey by offering foundational medical courses.
“From the outset, the institution was dedicated to providing quality education in the medical field, equipping students with essential skills and knowledge to serve their communities effectively,” the website reads.
The websites lists Dr Jackims Awendo and Joel Kiplangat as executive directors while Ivan Apollo as the principal with Grace Wanjiru (Registrar-Academics).
