New details have emerged in the mysterious disappearance of a 16-year-old student from Kenya High School, whose last known movements were captured on surveillance cameras in Nyeri County.
Joy Wanjiru, a Form Three student, was reported missing on April 1, 2026, after leaving Nairobi.According to her family, she boarded a matatu at around 11:15 a.m. and was expected to alight at Skuta, a stop located a few kilometres from Nyeri town.
However, information from the driver indicated that she remained on board until the vehicle reached Nyeri town at approximately 2:30 p.m., raising questions about the change in her travel plans.
CCTV footage from different locations has helped investigators trace her movements later that day.
One recording from Gikambura estate shows her walking along a road before turning back and retracing her steps.
Witnesses confirmed seeing her moving alone in the area despite having no known reason to be there.
Further footage from the Sagana area near River Ragati captured her at 6:37 p.m. walking toward Karatina town while carrying a bag.Minutes later, another camera recorded her again, but this time she had changed direction and was no longer carrying the bag.
She was seen in the company of an unidentified man, with both heading toward the Ragati River bridge.
The man appeared to walk ahead while she followed behind.
The location near the bridge later became significant after one of her bags was recovered there the following morning.
A second bag was found days later, adding to the uncertainty surrounding her disappearance.
As the search entered its tenth day, local authorities, led by Ragati location chief Danson Ithiru, intensified efforts to locate the missing student.
Police are now focusing on identifying the man seen with her and establishing the sequence of events that led to her disappearance.
The case has drawn widespread concern, with her family and the public urging for swift action to uncover the truth.
