Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has provided an encouraging update on Mary Claire, a gospel singer and acid attack survivor currently receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital. In a video shared on Facebook, Sonko stressed that his involvement in the case is driven by compassion rather than a desire for public attention.
“We always follow up in all our cases. This work is out of care and responsibility, not for PR,” he stated. He also extended words of encouragement to the victim and her family, adding, “we wish her strength and a smooth healing journey.”
During his visit to the hospital, Sonko met Mary Claire in person. According to him, she expressed optimism about her recovery, noting that her condition is gradually improving. Medical staff attending to her confirmed that she is responding well to treatment, with expectations that her eyesight will recover over time. The update has been met with relief and support from many who have been following her story online.
To ensure legal accountability, Sonko has appointed Elizabeth Oketch to represent the case. In a phone conversation, he sought updates on progress, with the lawyer assuring him that she is committed to pursuing justice thoroughly. As she emphasized, “no stone will be left unturned in seeking justice for Mary Claire.”
Sonko also expressed appreciation for the doctors and nurses at Kenyatta National Hospital, commending their dedication and professionalism. He highlighted not only Mary Claire’s progress but also the care being given to other patients, calling on the public to recognize and value the efforts of healthcare workers.
Addressing public discourse surrounding the incident, Sonko dismissed narratives framing the attack as a gender conflict. He stated clearly that “this is not about boy versus girl,” urging that attention remain focused on justice for the victim and accountability for those responsible.
Mary Claire, a member of the SDA gospel group Redemption Ministers, reportedly suffered severe injuries after being attacked with acid by individuals allegedly linked to her former partner. The incident sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for action against gender-based violence.
Sonko’s continued involvement—covering medical expenses and legal support—has brought hope to the victim’s family. He has urged Kenyans to keep Mary Claire in their prayers and to stand firmly against all forms of violence.
The update has been widely welcomed, with many praising the intervention and expressing solidarity with the survivor.
