Suspected robbers

A woman working at an M-Pesa shop in Meru County has drawn attention on social media after CCTV footage reportedly showed her locking suspected robbers inside the shop during an attempted night robbery.

According to widely shared surveillance footage, several armed men allegedly forced their way into the shop after business hours. The incident reportedly occurred at night when the suspects entered the premises and demanded money. During the encounter, the woman can be heard in the video saying “Sioni funguo,” a Swahili phrase meaning “I cannot see the keys,” while the suspects attempted to obtain access to cash and other valuables.

Moments later, the footage appears to show the woman stepping out of the shop and closing the door behind her, leaving the suspected robbers inside. Reports circulating online suggest the door was then locked from the outside, effectively trapping the men inside the building. The suspects were allegedly unable to escape before authorities were alerted.

Local reports indicate that police were later informed about the situation and responded to the scene. It was not immediately clear how many suspects were involved or whether any arrests were made following the incident. Authorities had not released an official statement about the details of the attempted robbery at the time the video continued to circulate online.

The footage has since spread widely across social media platforms, where many users have praised the woman’s quick reaction during the alleged robbery attempt. Some commenters described her actions as calm and strategic, though officials have not publicly confirmed the full sequence of events shown in the video.

Security experts often advise employees facing robbery situations to prioritize personal safety and avoid confrontation. It remains unclear whether the shop worker had received any formal safety training prior to the incident.
