Shock and concern have gripped residents of Rongai after CCTV cameras captured a group of women allegedly stealing items from a newly opened supermarket.
The incident happened at Optidrops Supermarket, which was officially opened just two weeks ago in Rongai, near Ngong in Nairobi.
According to the supermarket management, the women were caught on security cameras taking several items from the shelves and hiding them in their handbags without paying.
In the footage, the women appear neatly and smartly dressed, casually walking around the store as if they were regular customers.
However, the CCTV video reportedly shows them picking up items such as cooking oil and sanitary pads and placing them inside their bags. The total value of the stolen goods is estimated to be about Sh5,000.
The video has since been shared widely on social media, sparking heated debate among netizens.
Many expressed shock that individuals who appeared well-dressed and organized could be involved in such an act.
Some online users questioned why the suspects would risk stealing items of relatively small value, while others called for swift action to bring them to justice.
The management of Optidrops Supermarket said they reviewed the CCTV footage after noticing stock shortages.
Upon checking the recordings, they discovered the suspected theft.
The supermarket owner has appealed to members of the public who may recognize the women to share information that could help identify them.
The incident has raised concerns among business owners in Rongai, especially because the supermarket is still new. Traders say theft can cause major losses, particularly for small and growing businesses.
