Former Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen ( Rtd ) Daniel Ishmael Opande on Wednesday made a rare public appearance as he was honoured with highest military honour in Sierra Leone.
The retired general was awarded with the Grand Commander of the Order of Rokel (GCOR ) during the Armed Forces Day and Investiture Ceremony held in Freetown.
Lt Gen ( Rtd ) Opande was the force commander of the United Nations Military Mission in Sierra Leone that ended years of a civil war that was launched by rebel leader, Foday Sankoh.

The respected General is credited for restoring order in the West African state which was on brink of collapse at the height of that war.
In 2000, he was tipped to succeed General Daudi Tonje as Chief of General Staff. But as fate would have it, he was seconded by President Daniel Arap Moi to the UN Mission in Sierra Leone.
