Police in Kisumu County are hunting down a gang suspected of robbing a man of Sh280,000 shortly after he withdrew money from a bank in Sondu town.

The incident happened on Wednesday, January 14, along the busy Sondu–Nyamira route. Sondu is located between Kisumu and Kericho counties and serves as a commercial hub for the surrounding regions.

According to a police report, the victim had visited a local KCB branch in Sondu earlier in the day. He withdrew Sh300,000, which he intended to use for domestic purposes at his home in Magwagwa, Nyamira County.

After leaving the bank, the man went shopping within Sondu town, where he spent about Sh20,000. He then boarded his pick-up truck and began the journey home.

Moments later, he noticed a saloon car following him closely. As he continued driving, the vehicle suddenly sped ahead and blocked his path, forcing him to stop.

Five men reportedly jumped out of the car. They were armed with an object the victim believed to be a pistol, causing him to comply without resistance.

The attackers quickly grabbed the remaining Sh280,000 in cash and took his car keys. They then jumped back into their vehicle and sped off towards the Chabera direction.

Police officers later visited the scene and launched investigations. Authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to track down the suspects and recover the stolen money.

This case adds to a growing list of incidents where customers are targeted shortly after withdrawing large sums of money from banks. Police say preliminary investigations suggest that some attacks may involve collusion between criminals and rogue bank employees.

In other cases, detectives believe suspects loiter inside banking halls, monitoring customers who make large withdrawals before trailing them outside and striking at the right moment.
