Musician Rosemary Wahu Kagwi has shared a touching story about her late father and the unusual way he handled her dowry during wedding talks.
Wahu, married to fellow artist Nameless, opened up about how her father’s main concern was their happiness, not money.
Her father, a man she clearly admired, asked for just KSh 8,000 as dowry during the negotiations. But her in-laws were surprised by the small amount and quickly increased it to KSh 90,000.
The singer fondly remembers how her father was different from the usual traditions. He was open-minded and encouraged his daughters to be honest about their feelings and who they liked.
Wahu shared that her father was the first in his village to go to high school, thanks to the support of a cousin. He was well respected and even had admirers from his village when he met Wahu’s mother, who was from another place.
“I remember when I brought home a boy I liked for lunch when I was just 13. Dad asked me what I liked about him and told me to look for kindness, respect, and humility,” she said.
Unlike many others, her father allowed Wahu to take part in the dowry talks, breaking Kikuyu customs. He wanted peace and a strong marriage, not just tradition.
Wahu honored her father for teaching her important life lessons and for his role in shaping the family she loves today.
This story reminds us that love and understanding matter more than money when building a happy home.
