Several traffic police officers were arrested early in the morning during an anti-corruption operation in Machakos County.

The raid was carried out by anti-corruption detectives following complaints from members of the public about bribery on the roads.

According to sources familiar with the operation, the officers were nabbed while on duty at different roadblocks within Machakos town and nearby highways.

The early morning timing was meant to catch the suspects off guard and stop the alleged illegal activities before the busy day began.

The officers are accused of demanding and receiving bribes from motorists in exchange for allowing them to continue with their journeys.

Drivers, especially those operating public service vehicles and commercial trucks, have often complained of being forced to pay money to avoid arrest, vehicle inspection, or charges for minor traffic offences.

During the raid, detectives reportedly recovered cash believed to be proceeds of corruption.

Some of the officers were arrested on the spot, while others were taken in for questioning after investigations linked them to the alleged bribery network.

Residents of Machakos welcomed the arrests, saying corruption on the roads has been a long-standing problem. Many motorists said they often feel harassed and intimidated by traffic officers, even when they have not broken any law.

They expressed hope that the operation would bring lasting change and discipline within the traffic police department.

Anti-corruption officials stated that the raid was part of ongoing efforts to clean up the police service and restore public trust.

They warned that more operations would be carried out in other regions as investigations continue. The officials also encouraged the public to report any cases of bribery or abuse of power by law enforcement officers.

The arrested officers are expected to be processed according to the law and may be charged in court if sufficient evidence is found against them.
