The family of late gospel musician Betty Bayo has formally asked the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to begin an inquest into her sudden and unexplained death. Her mother, Joyce Wairimu, submitted the petition through the family’s legal representatives, saying they were left with more questions than answers after losing their daughter in circumstances they describe as unclear and deeply troubling.
According to the petition, the family insists that the singer had no known medical history that would suggest an illness serious enough to lead to her sudden death. They claim they were not issued with any medical reports detailing the treatment she allegedly received before she passed away. The family adds that no official autopsy report was given to them, leaving them unable to understand what exactly caused her death.
The petition also states that the burial process happened unusually fast, which the family believes may have prevented a proper examination of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. They argue that the quick burial limited the window for independent medical review and could have allowed crucial details to be overlooked or concealed.
In their request to the DPP, the family is pushing for a thorough investigation conducted by state agencies. They want the authorities to review all medical steps taken before the singer’s death, retrieve any clinical documents, and establish whether any procedures were ignored or handled improperly. They note that an inquest would allow investigators to question witnesses, analyse medical timelines, and determine whether further action is required.
The family, through their lawyers, has also asked the DPP to consider approving an exhumation for an independent post mortem should investigators deem it necessary. Their position is that only a transparent forensic process can answer the questions that have caused the family so much distress.
Betty Bayo’s passing shocked fans and the gospel music community, as many remembered her as a vibrant and active figure who showed no public signs of illness. The sudden death, combined with the lack of medical documentation, has pushed the family to seek state intervention so that the truth can be established without doubt.
The family now hopes that the DPP will act swiftly, arguing that delays could interfere with the availability of evidence or hinder the clarity needed in investigations involving a sudden death. They maintain that their only goal is to understand exactly what happened to their daughter and to ensure that no crucial details are lost.
