A dramatic standoff unfolded in Nyamaiya after supporters allied to former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i and Kisii Governor Simba Arati confronted each other during a heated political engagement. The two groups exchanged harsh words as security teams struggled to separate them before the situation escalated.
Residents who had gathered for the event watched in shock as the rival camps surged forward, each accusing the other of provoking the confrontation. The exchange created a chaotic atmosphere, forcing local administrators to intervene and restore order.
Witnesses say the disagreement began when both sides attempted to take control of the venue, leading to a tense face-off. Youth allied to both leaders shouted slogans while daring each other, prompting fears that violence would break out.
Governor Arati’s allies accused Matiang’i’s team of attempting to disrupt the meeting, claiming the former CS still commands a faction seeking to challenge the county administration. Matiang’i’s side dismissed the allegations and alleged that Arati’s supporters had arrived with the intention of intimidating them.
Police officers on the ground formed a human barrier between the two camps and repeatedly urged the groups to disperse. Their rapid response was credited with preventing the confrontation from turning into a physical brawl.
Community elders from Nyamaiya later condemned the incident and urged political leaders from the region to restrain their supporters. They warned that growing tension between the two influential figures could destabilise local peace if not addressed early.
Analysts note that the rivalry between Team Matiang’i and Team Arati has intensified as both sides seek dominance within the Gusii political landscape. The near-clash now adds a new layer of uncertainty ahead of upcoming regional political activities.
Local leaders have called for dialogue between the two camps to prevent further confrontations and maintain harmony in Nyamira County. They insist that political competition must not be allowed to spill into violence or disrupt community unity.
