As reported by the Spanish outlet Fichajes, Arsenal is keenly interested in acquiring Borussia Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy when the transfer window reopens in January.
The Gunners spent a considerable amount to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon last summer. The Swedish player has performed reasonably well, scoring 6 goals in 14 matches across all competitions.
Nevertheless, Arsenal is on the lookout for a strong competitor, and Fichajes states that the Gunners are ‘seriously’ focused on securing Guirassy, who has a release clause set at £44 million for January.
According to sources, Guirassy’s potential move to the Emirates Stadium may happen alongside Gabriel Jesus departing the club. Reports from Fichajes indicate that Jesus’s departure seems to be ‘imminent.’
Unlikely deal.
Guirassy joined Dortmund from Stuttgart in the summer of 2024. The 29-year-old enjoyed a fantastic first season, scoring 38 goals and making 9 assists across 50 appearances. This season, the Guinean star has maintained his impressive performance, netting 7 goals and providing 4 assists in 11 matches in all competitions for the Bundesliga club.
The ex-Amiens forward boasts a robust physical stature and demonstrates solid finishing abilities. However, it seems unlikely that the Gunners will pursue his signing in January. Following their significant £250 million expenditure over the summer, Arsenal may find it challenging to allocate £44 million upfront for another centre-forward at the start of the year.
With Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus set to return from their injuries, they can pose competition for Gyokeres. Additionally, manager Mikel Arteta might consider using Merino as a makeshift striker.
Currently, Jesus has made his comeback from a prolonged knee injury. The Brazilian has stated his intention to remain with the club past January. With this in consideration, Arsenal is not expected to sign another centre-forward and might defer any additions until the summer.
Even then, Guirassy might not be the right choice for the Gunners. He will turn 30 in March, prompting Arsenal to look for a younger striker instead. They were interested in acquiring Benjamin Sesko prior to Gyokeres and could target a forward with a similar age and profile for next season.
