Things got out of hand at a prayer meeting in St. Peter and Paul Parish Etago in Mugirango South, Kisii County. At this time, some young people were turned away just because they were dressed in a way that was deemed inappropriate. The priests of this church disagreed, even though Romans10:9-10 says that people should “come as you are” to be saved. The new members on Thursday turned away priest Benjamin Ndemo from the church gathering, just like the women said they would, because their clothes didn’t follow church rules.

The purpose of this event for young people was to help them learn about living a good life according to the Bible. “It is not ethical to wear clothes that are too revealing. Ndemo said, “There is a certain way that both men and women should act, and that includes how they dress.” It has started a conversation about how far religious traditions should go to make room for everyone.

Some people backed the priest because they thought he was keeping order in the house of God, while others thought it went against the universal message of salvation that everyone loves. This will bring the conversation back to where it should be, which is about what people think about clothing regulations and how they fit within the religious establishment. The community’s likely reaction to it will include the friction that the cleric has caused by trying to protect tradition instead of including everyone.
